The path to caddie and golf
Firstly, Mỹ Lụa, can you share a bit about yourself and how you became a caddie at Laguna Lăng Cô?
Reflecting with a sparkle in her eyes, Mỹ Lụa shared, “I was a tourism guide student at the College of Culture and Arts in Đà Nẵng. However, for some health reasons, I couldn’t continue as a guide post-graduation. After trying various jobs, I learned about caddie recruitment at Laguna Lăng Cô – a premium resort in Central Vietnam. I saw it as an opportunity to pursue my passion for service in tourism and sports. That was the beginning of my 11-year journey with this profession.”
The caddie career
In the world, it can be seen that men make up the majority in this profession. Certainly, being a female caddie comes with its challenges. How did you overcome them?
She shared decisively, “The first challenge was perseverance. We underwent four months of harsh weather conditions in Central Vietnam – unpredictable rain and scorching sun. Initially, without much experience or guidance, I faced several skin issues from being outdoors all day, and the constant sickness…
The first two years as a caddie were tough, with some golfers not trusting my abilities. However, with an unending desire to learn and a passion for golf, I proved my capabilities and earned their respect.”
What qualities are most important for a caddie in your opinion?
Mỹ Lụa thoughtfully stated, “Not just knowledge of golf, but also patience, hard work, and good communication skills. These qualities not only help us support golfers in the best way possible but also create a memorable experience on the golf course. Additionally, honesty is a vital trait for caddies. On the field, guests might entrust you with valuable items or cash, and greed could end your role as a caddie quickly.”
Do you have any special memories with golfers on the golf course?
Her eyes lit up as she reminisced, “Meeting and guiding golfers and celebrities is a huge honor for me. Moreover, helping a golfer control their emotions and score well was incredibly fulfilling. Their gratitude and joy are major motivations for me.”
Balancing work and personal life
How do you balance your work and personal life?
Mỹ Lụa answered comfortably, “The caddie job requires flexible hours, and I always try to prioritize work. Fortunately, my family, including my husband and children, are supportive and willing to share household responsibilities, which makes me feel very cherished.”
What have you learned from golf in your role as a caddie?
She smiled deeply, “Golf taught me patience, honesty, focus, and strategy. Being a caddie helped me learn observation and flexible response skills, valuable lessons for life.”
What role do women play in golf, especially as caddies?
She proudly stated, “Men may have physical strength and endurance, allowing for more flexibility than women. However, I believe women can also develop these qualities over time with job adaptation. Additionally, women bring a fresh perspective to golf, promoting diversity and equality. We showcase sensitivity, agility, and finesse, enriching the sport.”
What are your plans in the golf industry?
Mỹ Lụa shared optimistically, “I hope to attend advanced golf training courses to better serve golfers and advance my career. I also want to expand my knowledge to guide new caddies, helping them find the best path in their roles.”

Do you have any advice for women pursuing a career as a caddie?
Mỹ Lụa encouraged, “Be confident and never stop striving. As long as you have passion and are willing to learn, you can become a great caddie.”
