Extending beyond the walk noted above, this Hike includes 2 km of mountain trail discovering war history sites that include the zig-zag trenches used to protect against exploding bombs dropped from aircraft, and artillery from the sea, and to conceal human movement along the mountain. A gun bunker pre-dating the America-Vietnam war is also visited with guests receiving a historical account of the purposes of the bunker and trenches, the strategic value of the location, and the effects of the chemical defoliants on the native vegetation (and people), and the forests regeneration since.
During this walk, many tree and plant species are identified with narratives describing purposes for food, furniture, building, or boating. At the end of this mountain spur sits a small temple where guests learn about the local custom of praying for their husbands to return, for a bountiful catch and providing a spirit house for the souls of those lost at sea.
Join the Farm and Forest Walk to learn more about the social and cultural impacts of the war, local resilience, and history. Learn also about the uses of the local flora within Vietnamese life.
